The answer to the puzzle [Apr. 1st, 2004|01:31 pm]

[Current Mood |Solopcistic]

It's April.

And it's snowing.

Now admittedly in Cleveland, this is not that remarkable of an event.

However.

This is not a quirky little remnant of winter after an otherwise mild season, as we had two years ago. Nor is it a last reminder dip back into bad weather in an otherwise steady climb toward spring.

No, this weather is predicted to contine. Gloomy, damp, chill.

It's like being in London, but without the good parts.

I am not a happy camper. And of course, being the center of the universe that I am, I was feeling very perplexed as to why the Weather Gods were continuing to displease me. I mean, I finally came to see that the long, cold winter was there so that I would appreciate summer - a summer of no school - more intensely. And the couple days of beautiful weather we had sent me into paroxysms of joy, so it's not like I was taking things for granted. So what is up with this?

And then I realized. This miserable weather is being held over so that when we hit the sunshine and heat of Las Vegas next week I will be able to enjoy it with an intensity bordering on orgasmic. There will be no, "well, it was getting nice in Cleveland...." No, Cleveland will be wrapped in subnormal temps and blustery showers, solely so I can feel extra smug out on the strip.

I'd like to personally thank everyone in the Midwest for the sacrifice they will be making on my behalf. Afterwards, you may resume your regularly scheduled Spring.

There are good parts? Hehehe.
I'd like to see Las Vegas some time but we're going to Florida in July...so that should be HOT.

Yeah, of course and buying the cheap and lovely clothes and going to all the other cool places, swimming with the poor bloody dolphins etc etc. My 8 year old can't wait...but my husband is worse!

Las Vegas

Las Vegas... <shudder type="horrified" />

I loathe Las Vegas. The excessive heat is a minor but important member of the short list of reasons why.

Re: Las Vegas

Does that list include that it is completely artificial, wholly plastic, and hermetically sealed against its own environment?

But that's its charm! Sodom andGammorah, two shows each night!

(The fact that it is an appalling natural resource sink sucking the life out of the desert is less charming, however.)

Re: Las Vegas

Actually, that list includes:

* The complete sensory overload - if I want to burn out my input stream, I'll find a rave, pop some Ecstasy, and stand in front of the speaker/strobe stack for an hour.
* The pervasive lack of humor - most of the people there seem to be grimly determined to enjoy themselves, dammit, or else are hysterically invested in having a good time at any cost.
* The generally base nature of the place - I don't mind appeals to my hedonstic side, but Vegas manages to make its appeals feel both cheap and perfunctory, which is never a turn-on for me.
* The inherent coldness, despite the desert heat - it strikes me as the kind of place that gradually leaches away one's soul until all that's left is a shambling hulk, lurching from casino to casino moaning "Quarters... quaaarrrrtersssss...."

And, of course, the enormous natural resource sink it represents is no high point either. Though most cities are enormous natural resource sinks: just think about the volume of raw material input that's required to support a city like NYC or Tokyo. It's a little too late for humanity to go back to the land, modulo a nuclear war (in which case we'll be better able to find the land at night thanks to the pretty glow) or a massive plague on the order of Captain Trips.

But anyway, and I forgot to say this last time, I'm glad you're getting away for a bit, and I hope you do have tons o' fun! (Which sounds sarcastic, but isn't.)

Re: Las Vegas

Perhaps I am less cynical because this is only my second trip. And I vastly prefer the shopping to the gambling (at least then when I come home with no money I have valuable parting gifts!)

Yeah, snowing, and all I wore to work this morning was a stupid sweater. Glad I didn't have to go outside except for a short break. B-r-r-r-r.

It's like being in London, but without the good parts.

This brought a smile to my face. I say this at least once a week about the weather in Roanoke in March. It is often windy and rainy here and if I have to deal with both of those weather conditions I want to be dealing in London. At least there I am probably on my way to a show in the West End or off to the V&A.

sunshine and heat of Las Vegas next week

I am so looking forward to some nice weather and some good company! :-)

Hi. I didn't want to comment on the entry after this with a "Hi!! I just added you having seen your comments all over the place and seeing people reference you and I thought you were cool!" Cause I added you before I read that, and now I feel bad cause I feel like I look like one of those people who is drawn to drama and pain and I'm not. So, um, hi, and *hugs* about your sister, and I didn't add you just cause of that.

Erm. I'm not as crazy as this makes me sound, I swear.
