Wow...I've done that way too many times recently (or at least things to the same sort).
Then again, I'm proud to be a geek! :)
Well, I am too, actually. It just amused the heck outta me.
But strangely, with the people I used to play with death threats were common... *giggle* But not news worthy!
Exactly. We threaten to strangle the GM regularly, but no one writes it up on Yahoo!
I did the exact same thing.
*giggle* I tend to have to force myself to remember that GM and DM are not always Game Master and Dungeon Master, more often than not they are District Manager and General Manager.
Yeah, but what fun is that???
Not much, from what I remember of when my dad was working his way up the managerial alphabet. Well, maybe it was to him, but as a kid it didn't impress me much. :)
Personally I think it would be a lot more fun if the District Manager just went ahead and assumed the title of Dungeon Master. At least it would show he is attempting to relate with his employees better. :)
I don't even pay magic, and yet, I thought the same thing.

Given the fact we usually don't call General managers General managers over here in this country it's even more confusing. Needless to say I wondered about the same things as you did.
I have to wonder if the headline writer by chance knew that it would cause confusion and was amused by the thought - these are computer geeks after all.

Looks to me like AP actually wrote the article and Yahoo just put it on-line. So I don't think the headline writer actually did. Unless he plays Magic and just wants to fuck with us poor geeks. ;)
As soon as I saw that headline, I assumed the same thing you did, and wondered at the roleplaying aspect of Magic. My second thought was "Weird, why would that be news-worthy, really? No one cares about Magic."
I didn't follow the link, and didn't understand why these thoughts were weird until you mentioned Orlando Magic.
We're all such geeks...it's great!

I think you win the geek award. Hee!

I guess the saddest part is that I haven't played Magic since the Ice Age expansion started coming out. I really should have learned by now that there's more to life than roleplaying, and card games. :)
My first thought was that a roleplaying GM of some sort was being threatened and I didn't question that until I read the rest of your paragraph. So you definitely are not alone.
I'm glad you mentioned Orlando Magic, because I couldn't get past The Gathering either. (And I should probably be alarmed that the death threat didn't seem incongruent with Game Master to me, since I know some people who get *very* upset when you kill off their characters.)
I don't even play Magic, and that was my first thought. It made perfect sense to me that some special Magic event at a convention that required a GM would result in death threats. Some people just take the game way too seriously.
Add me to the hopeless geek list.
Basketball is a dumb game.
Ha! That's the same train of thought I had when I read the opening. Too funny.
I guess it speaks to how well we have our priorities clear. At least, that's my take on it.
I wonder what we would have to do to have someone set up M:TG as a RPG....
Yeah...I've played that, it's a lot of fun.
Blech. They gave it something of a try with the Urza's Saga stuff, but it didn't take. Legend of the Five Rings
is the game that's gone that way.
They were saying they were going to do it for years, but it never happened.
Wow. I was so convinced that it was about RPing that I did a triple-take. Pathetic.
When I read the text for that URL I thought the exact same thing *geek hi-five* :D
I think I out-geeked you.
First, I thought it was a Game Master.
Second, I thought it was the general manager of Wizards of the Coast.
Third, I spent a while puzzling over your strange reference to basketball.
Wow...now I wish I had a crown I could hand you! :) You've definately out-geeked me, and probably the majority of the commenters here.
Yes, you take the geek prize.
Oh! I get it now! Yeah I thought someone wanted to curb stomp a game master, not a basketball guy. Geez, count me in the dorkathon!
There was one very annoying PLAYER in one of my groups who on three separate occasions got picked up and bodily tossed out the window. (We were on the ground floor.)
Our GM at the time was capable of twisting any other member of the group into a pretzel and slam-dunking them into a garbage can, so understandably enough no one ever gave HIM any death threats.
Me, I kind of assumed it was a tournament judge at first and that the newspaper had tried to use jargon it didn't understand (points for trying, though).
sports? feh, who needs them when we've got roleplaying to do?
You know you're both a geek and foreign when you take until the footnote on this entry to stop thinking: "Well, what ELSE could it mean?"
I think that Magic, along with Jazz and Heat and a couple of others, is indeed a dumb name for a basketball team.
And it's even worse because there is a basketball player with the first name Magic. Or was--dunno if he's still playing.
Magic Johnson. Not playing any longer. But it was highly confusing.
