It's no fun being a grownup [Oct. 18th, 2004|12:09 pm]

[Current Mood |sickFeeling like crap]

Morning dialogue:

Sick me: I feel even worse than yesterday.

Responsible me: Sick enough to stay home from work?

Sick me: I think so. This is terrible.

Responsible me: Sick enough to stay home even though _____ case is going to trial next week and you have documents to prepare?

Sick me: [sigh]

Responsible me: Sick enough to stay home even though you have to get documents from the office for that other project you're working on?

Sick me: [sigh]

Responsible me: Sick enough to stay home even though you need to have the attorney review that motion so you can make changes and get it filed?

Sick me: [sigh]

Responsible me: Sick enough to stay home even though you know that _____ is going to want more help with that other matter?

Sick me: No, I guess I'd better go in.

Of course, Attorney One is still not here, Attorney Two is out because of a family emergency, and Attorney Three may not be in at all.

Sick me: [sigh]

You rock. You got yourself to work even though you don't feel good, and you're still there even though some of the reasons you went are not.

You totally rock.

I do agree with you about the hazards of being a grownup. Perhaps you could go home early and get some rest?

Depends on when Attorney One actually gets here and what needs to be done. If I can get through it quickly, I will try to get home early.

But I'm not counting on that.

I know you can't count on it, but I will hope she/he gets there soon so you can get some rest.

Best of luck, and speedy recovery!

With me it usually goes:

Sick me: I'm sick, but I'll live. I can go in to work.

Responsible me: Oh no, you're so sick you shouldn't go in and spread germs around causing everyone else to get sick and need time off. Go back to bed.

Sick me: Oh, okay then *shifty grin*

You know, that argument is really ineffective in law firms. Any illness not requiring hospitalization is expected to be shaken off. [g]

It used to be ineffective where I work. Then my manager, who refused to take a day off, passed his flu onto about 10 of us and at least half passed it onto their children.

Now it's very effective.

I worked at a place where one of the bosses would catch pneumonia almost every time he got a cold. Coming to work sick was a sin there.

Me too. Although I don't get paid time off 'cause I'm a temp, so it's even worse in my case. :/

Anyone who knows that reference deserves to be friended. As the irresponsible captain would say, do what you want to do!

Heh... T'sa, a friend of mine back in Georgia and The Woman Who Wants My Body (because I'm pretty sure there's only the one, ergo it deserves a title) has a boss who is a NOTORIOUS hypochodriac. She's the OTHER end of the spectrum from you, I think. All she has to do is call into work and sniffle a little into the phone and he tells her to stay home. And if he sees her out and about later in the day, she can always say "Well, I TOLD you it was nothing, but you wanted me to stay home!"

Of course, working for your uncle is probably just like that, too...

I have that type of argument with myself, but usually the other way. I'll push myself so much when I'm sick and I should be resting that I have to convince myself that I shouldn't be doing things.

And, for heaven's sake, get some rest and get better!

Yeah, I hope I do, too. So far not improving, but that can't last forever.
