Too much caffeine, too many antihistamines [Apr. 26th, 2005|05:17 am]
Zoethe
[Current Mood |sickincreasingly sick]

As if my life weren't complicated enough, I appear to be coming down with a UTI. And a really ugly skin rash on my left side under my arm.

I so do not have time for this. [sigh]

Treatment: massive doses of vitamin C, a flood of water, and just enough caffeine to avoid head explodey. Oh, and try to tough it out without the antihistamines that make my crippling-pollen-allergies-ridden life worth living.

Go me.

Work was hell yesterday. We're expected to bill 6.25 hours per day. I billed 8.5, and barely made a scratch in the surface. Better than not enough work, defintely, but something a little steadier than the feast/famine cycle would be greatly appreciated. And why does it always get like this right around finals?

Enough whining. Back to work.

Poor zoethe! :( I know just how miserable that feeling is, and it's only exacerbated by stress.

On the bright side, at least your head isn't being eaten by a giant rabbit. *points at userpic*

Didn't even know they existed. Will have to check them out. Where do you find them?

I don't know where you find cranberry tablets over there (drugstore or large grocery store would be my best guess), but cranberry juice has just the same effect, and I know that's readily available.

Another, slightly less palatable, treatment is to drink a glass of water with a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in it every so often. It neutralises the acid in your urine, which eases the 'pissing battery acid' sensation. Cranberry juice is your best bet, though - it's more pleasant to drink!

Hope you feel better soon. It sucks to feel so cruddy when you're so busy.

I can't stomach cranberry juice. That's a solution that has never worked for me. But it looks like the pharmacy around the corner carries them, so I'm gonna make a stop on my way to the office.

I hate the stuff myself, it's made me quite sick in the past, but the tablets work ok for me. Good luck.

For the UTI - cranberry juice. You can also buy cran capsules at healthfood stores.

Can't stand cranberry juice, and it has never worked for me. Got the cran tabs, and they do seem to be helping.

Feel better!!! Best advice for some of this stuff, since you can't stomach cran juice, is to just keep flooding your system with water. (Also great for losing weight. I now drink over a gallon a day, and since started that I've lost about ten more pounds than my previous program was letting me drop.)

Good luck and feel better.

If the pain from the UTI is bad, try taking half a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda (ummm baking soda in your country) dissolved in a cup of warm water. This will taste horrible and shouldn't really be repeated more than once or twice a day, and it will make you burp, but it does help with the pain.

Also, what other people said about cranberry tablets. I had a bad run of UTIs and found that taking them as a preventative when I know I'll be prone to infection was very effective.

Having already read the other suggestions, I won't need to recommend cranberry juice. What other things you can drink to help you get rid of the UTI (I had it before, gods, I hated it), drink lemon water. Just one slice, perhaps two, of lemon squeezed into a pint of water. It should be bearable to drink. Lemon's a great way to get rid of UTI. I recommend leaving the lemon slices, once they're squeezed, in the water. Usually end up getting more lemon in the water if you can't squeeze them very well for whatever reason.

Plus... nettle tea. Nettle's great for fighting infection.

For the rash, I recommend taking a hot tub bath with a box of baking soda. It can help get rid of the rash and help make sure it's not itchy (if it is).

Hope you get better!

Vitamin C, mom. It does a body good. But you knew that.

I envy that you get this many comments on a post about a UTI and a rash though ;o)
