No more making the donuts [Dec. 28th, 2005|09:46 am]

[Current Mood |thankfulthankful]

Fred the Baker died today. Sure, his name was really Michael Vale, and sure most of us never even knew that he had a name in the commercial. But we all remember his sleepy stagger toward the front door of his house:

"Time to make the donuts."

I'm not sure what it is about certain commercials that turn them from a catchy slogan to a cultural icon. "Try it, you'll like it!" "Where's the beef?!" "Sorry, Charlie!"

"Time to make the donuts."

We still use that saying when there is an endless chore cycle: time to make the donuts. The commerical hasn't been aired in how long? And yet it captures a level of desperate dedication that is both admirable and pitiful. It makes sense in a way that Mr. Whipple's "Please don't squeeze the Charmin'!" never did, despite the persistence of that ad campaign. It has some of the same flavor as the lonely Maytag repairman, but we can relate more to having too much to do than we can to too little.

Michael Vale may never have gotten any other work, but his image lives on. And if there are donuts in heaven, I hope he just gets to eat them.

I heard that this morning and found myself sad without being able to explain why.

Actually, didn't hear anything. Saw a montage of the commercials on the news and surmised that he'd died.

Even after you've made the donuts, it's time to make the donuts...

Ironic that as I peeled myself out of bed this morning I mumbled "Time to make the fuckin' doughnuts".

Indeed, Fred the Baker will remain a cultural icon.

I thought that guy was cool. It's nice to finally see his real name, and if there's doughnuts in heaven, I hope they're never stale and that the coffee is always fresh.

How ironic that he died from complications of diabetes. Looks like the donuts got him.

Definitely one of the best ad campaigns ever. Gotta go now, time to beat up my database make the donuts...

Sadly, I have no idea what you old people are talking about. :(

Oh, I believe you always wondered why I was a social conservative but an economic liberal. I made it readable this time, and less than 2 pages in Word, as you requested Mrs. Ferrett.
