Well, crud [Feb. 16th, 2006|10:24 pm]
Zoethe
[Current Mood |sicksick]

Creeping crud.

I have been surrounded, the past couple weeks, by classmates who've been coughing, sneeezing, and sniffling. Sure enough, tonight my throat is getting sore.

It's frustrating that people have to keep showing up when they are clearly contagious, but the world is not kind to those who take time off. In a 16-week semester, only 4 absences are allowed. After that, the policy is to lower the grade by half a point. Not a lot of cushion. Work is the same. Sure, they say stay home when you're sick, but try doing it and it's a crisis.

For now, it's Thera-Flu, gargling with salt water, and bed. I hope I can chase this away.

same at my workplace. We work with young kids so are prone to getting exposed to every virus under the sun, but most of us can't afford to take more than a sick day a month unless we want to cut into our vacation time or not get paid at all. It sucks going to work and hearing other people sniffle, cough, sneeze, wheeze...and *know* that the little bugs are getting into your system. Bleargh.

Our current crud de jour is more of a cough your lungs out thing rather than a sore throat thing.

I hope you feel better soon.

I agree, people should stay home. My last sickness was due to someone coming into work when she was dying. It was horrible.

Am glad you have Thera-Flu, hope you feel better soon.

Working at one of the largest universities in the world, with a young child in daycare.... I am a HUGE fan of 'airborne'.

Yeah, it tastes terrible... but, man, you can't beat it for staving off colds and flu....

The last cold I thought I was getting didn't go anywhere. It's sort of been a theme of mine for almost a month - thinking I'm getting sick and then not exactly getting all the way there.

I think this one's got me, though.

Feel better soon! I know that the absence policy in law school used to drive me batty because I knew I would be exposed to all sorts of delightful germs. No one wanted to miss a class and risk a lower grade, thus they shared the love.

Here's another wish for a speedy recovery.

My grandma always recommended a stiff shot of scotch to cure any bug. And while it may not be the most medically sound, I like to think that burn going down means it's killing all sorts of nasties.

Then again, this is the woman who scared off a burglar from her house at age 83, so the germs were probably more afraid of her than the liquor. :)

Meh... the U I'm teaching at right now allows only *2* absences in an 11 week term... the 3rd can be negotiated with the instructor - but after that? it's an administrative drop from the class - no exceptions.
3 lates or leaving early = 1 absence!

I've had more germ factories in my proximity in the past couple of months than in the past couple of years!!

That stuff just grates on my nerves.

My ultimate defensive weapon is Purell/Hand Sanitizer... I almost bathe in it during cold/flu season -- keep it in my pockets - use it before and after touching anything... keyboards, door handles, elevator buttons, even pens that aren't mine!
Of course, I have to keep lotion in the other pocket, or I'd look like I dipped my hands in lye...
But it keeps it down to a dull roar!

Feel better!!!!!

Wow, that's brutal. Whatever happened to college being an adult experience with consequences tied to results?

And thanks.

Feel better, dearheart. The flu shot I got in the fall seems to have held off all but one bug this winter. I'm better off then I've been in years, which is good since Bronchitis is going around Brent's office right now.

Sending virtual Warm Honey with lemon for your throat and lotsa love and good heathly vibes in general.

I know how you feel. I work with kids. They gave me three different germs in the past two weeks. I beat the first two fairly well, but the third is a "cough your lungs up" type, and it's kicked up the asthma. I've been living on cough drops for two days, and yesterday I was miserable with wheezing and hacking. When I suggested I might not be in today, the Dad looked shocked and mentioned how much work he and his wife have to get done at the office before they can go skiing next week. So while I have the week off, I can spend it recuperating. Hope you feel better soon.

Bleah, though I do understand where they are coming from. After all, I am going to the office sick because I have most of next week off and have stuff I need to accomplish.

in my classes, you can miss two and after that your grade is lowered half a letter grade, not half a point. half a point would be a virtually ridiculous penalty here, so I'm assuming your grading is considerably different. anyway, feel better!

Have a grade point, meaning have a letter. Yeah, it's the same, only we get a little more leeway.

your icon.. the white thing eating the teddy looks like a stuffed Max from Sam 'n Max...

Why do your icons always rock? huh? what can't some of your awesomeiconness rub off on me? *le sigh*

The white thing eating the teddy is actually the Vorpal Bunny from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I came into my office one day to discover that my co-workers had set up that little vingnette, complete with sign, on my desk. After laughing until tears rolled, I made certain to get a picture for an icon.

At this point, on the bookshelf behind me, said bunny is chewing on a small stuffed alligator (coutesy of a vendor) while said alligator chomps on the leg of poor teddy.

Poor teddy, with his little red heart. He always gets the worst of it.

And thanks!

To me that is kind attendance. Gentle, even.

At CCAD if you missed 4 classes you flunked the course. Period. There were teachers that dropped you half a point for missing 1 class, but school-wide policy was at 4, you flunked. These were also 16 week semesters.

Be prepared to feel progressively worse for a week +. Pam is on day 4 right now with sore throat, runny nose and severe headache. She woke up with a 101 degree temp, which went back down fairly quickly I guess. She went back to sleep for a few hours then got up & went to work, but she wasn't happy about it. Condolences, this bug is EEEVIL!

Oh a happier note, next week I am ordering the entirety of Ultimate Spidey in hardcover for 1/2 bloody price! Damn, working for a publisher has it's perks, don't it? :)
