Congrats to you - to your baby sister - and to your niece!!!
As my generation has begun to have children, making my grandmother a great-grandmother, I have begun to ponder my relationship to my cousin's children.
The answer is first cousins, once removed. My grandparent is their great-grandparent. Two people who share a great grandparent are second cousins.
Just in case anyone asks...
Yes. I had that all doped out as a kid because I grew up with lots of first and second cousins. Loads of extended family. I still kind of miss that - we're all spread all over creation these days.
Congrats! I was a great-auntie when I was 21 - having a sister who's a grandma is a funny feeling :)
You're obviously not the eldest child in your family! I remember when I was in 6th grade and two fellow student became aunts. I was so jealous, and frustrated that (being oldest) I would never be an aunt and a kid.

Hooray for greatness, and sweet baby girls.
It's a bit strange when the kids you held in your arms as babies have babies!
wow - and congratulations!
Woohoo! Congratulations!! :)
And, hey, I could be a grand aunt myself. My oldest niece is 29, and my oldest nephew is 26!
Dayna is only 22, but like her mom having her kids early. She has a lot of the same "plumbing" problem that Kristi had, and Kris ended up with a hysterectomy by age 27, so while I usually don't like to see people having kids this young in her case it's probably a good thing.
Wow, poor Kristi, that's really young!
Is Dayna Kristi's daughter? I didn't realize she had more kids than her son.
Oh, yes. Two. Dayna is the older one, and she stayed out in Montana going to school, and then getting engaged, which is why she wasn't living here in the midst of All That.
Ah, I see! Congratulations to her! :)
I'm named after my aunt Dorothy. My kids started calling her Great Dot. Everyone in my family thinks that's cute. I'm now just mediocre Dorothy?
Yipes - I bet no one considered that when they gave her the nickname!
YAY! Congrats to you, O Great Auntie Gini!
You were great long before you because a great auntie. I just had to tell you that.
I know we don't talk as much online or post in each other's LJ's as much, but I still read both yours and The Ferrett's LJ's religiously. I don't comment because so many others do. I figure I'm doing your inbox a favor.
One of these days, if I can get out that way, we're going to have to go out for tea and crumpets or something equally prissy. Isn't that what great aunties do?
There are even some teahouses in the area! We definitely should.
My LJ reading has been spotty and my commenting even more so, but I am always glad to come across an entry from you. And you are most welcome, if you make it this way!
