Bravo to these McCain supporters [Oct. 24th, 2008|11:06 am]
Zoethe
[Current Mood |calmpatriotic]

This is worth watching past the obnoxious first minute to see how Americans who disagree with each other should comport themselves (having completely failed at embedding, here's the link).

Here, unfortunately, is an article about an appalling attack on a McCain supporter. (Edit: it appears that this attack may be faked. I understand that. My point is still valid.)

No one side in this issue holds the high road for behavior. But neither candidate is responsible for the appalling behavior of any of his supporters.

There are good and caring people on both sides in this election, just as there are in every other election. We don't all hold the same beliefs, and even among people whose beliefs are similar there can be disagreement as to the best way to reach our goals. But we are all Americans, all deserving of respect when we show respect and approbation when we overstep the bounds of polite discourse.

Spreading lies is not exercising free speech. Stealing campaign signs is not exercising free speech. Intimidating, harassing, or assaulting people with whom you disagree certainly does not deserve protection.

Bravo for those who keep the dialogue focused and deal with their opponents with deference and good will.

I can't see your link, but is that the "let me tell you about Islam" thing that ran in Huffington Post where the good and decent and non-frothing McCainies chased the hate-mongers away?

There's been a fair amount of suggestion that the whole episode was staged. (Which, if it was, I'm not saying it's bad -- clearly if it was staged it was put on by reasonable people who wish the world to know that they are not frothing hate-mongers, etc., so that's all right.) Do we know for sure whether it was legit?

I hadn't heard the "staged" accusations. I don't know. The message is still a good one, but less impactful if it's staged.

Comments to this article. Could go either way, but there is definitely suspicion. (On the other hand, isn't there always?)

I dunno. Could be that people don't want there to be sensible dialogue. There is a lot of emotion.

Unfortunately, just as you were posting this, I was reading this.

Kudos to her for acknowledging some suspicion when it would benefit her, and it's worth reading the page she links to of Obama supporters crossing the line.

Yeah, as much as Michelle Malkin is written off as Republican shill, she has a good track record of publicizing hoaxes and spends an awful lot of time criticizing party officials and candidates.

Interesting. And yeah, there are still bad things done by each side.

Something seems fishy

I'm looking at the pictures of the woman with the 'B' scratched in her face ....

I'm reminded of the incident where shock-talk TV host Morton Downey, Jr. claimed he was assaulted by neo-nazis in a men's room, and had a swastika scratched in his face. He claimed he was beaten, but didn't report it immediately, and didn't go for medical care.

The whole thing came across as an attention-grabbing sham when it was pointed out that the swastika was backwards -- as if drawn in a mirror.

The 'B' on her face is backwards in the photos. I suppose one or two could be flipped in the process of getting it to press, but all of them? And the 'getting medical attention later' thing also seems suspect.

Re: Something seems fishy

According to the foxnews.com site, she is confessing that the attack was made up.

A copy of the AP article. Still, Zoethe's point is valid.

Oh, I know Gini's point is a valid one. I was just pointing out some breaking news. :-)

Re: Something seems fishy

I hate being suspicious as well but I am... I really, really am. I mean, couldn't they have flipped the photo by now? I mean, I don't know what to make of this.

Re: Something seems fishy

Yeah, apparently there is something fishy about it - see Ferrett's comment above. Still, my point stands, even if my example sucks!

The mirror image of the swastika is the wan. Dyslexic neo-nazis or militant Buddhists?

In one of the Dickens novels I've read in this past year (it might have been The Pickwick Papers), there was this section detailing these two competing parties in this one town and all the spiteful, petty stuff they and their supporters did. Apparently we haven't changed much since then!

Oh, politics have been ugly since there have been politics. But we can always strive for better.

The attack was staged. The ex-volunteer is being charged for filing a false report.

I'm trying to figure out who shot that piece. Once I can figure out who shot it, then I can guess with some authority on whether or not the incident is staged.

There are a couple things though. I've been to a number of McCain events. I don't remember that many Muslims. Nor do I ever remember seeing the man that claimed to be with the campaign.

On another note, something I am writing about now, is that I have been called a racist or told I am throwing my lot in with racists by supporting McCain. You got to love it.
