Palimpsest [Feb. 5th, 2009|06:41 am]

Imagine traveling to a city of such beauty that visitors stand on street corners and weep for the privilege of being there. Where even the flies and cockroaches are things of beauty. Where passion can reshape the physical world and everything you touch, hear, eat or drink is created from the tears and love of its maker.

What would you do to enter such a place? What would you sacrifice to explore its wonders? What burden would you bear?

I just finished reading Palimpsest, Catherynne Valente's (catvalente's) upcoming novel about a city that is mapped on the skin, like a tattoo, and passed between lovers - a sexually transmitted city. Sleep with someone bearing the mark, and you will come away with your own piece of Palimpsest, indelibly etched on your skin, and strange dreams of a place too alien to exist, but for which you will yearn, and then search. Your life will never be the same.

As always, Cat's gorgeous, lyrical prose paints magnificent pictures of the world she has built. Every page is filled with evocative imagery and vivid characters.

It's like reading velvet.

Alas, you cannot read it yet. But you can preorder it from Amazon (scroll down to read other reviews of it). And while you are waiting, you can explore the world of Cat's imagination, starting with the Palimpsest trailers for the books. (How many books have trailers? It's kind of awesome.) And from there? Start looking for other hidden messages. Like the tattoos of Palimpsest, some treasures are visible, but not all are easily found. Search carefully.

Yeah, that was my thought exactly. I did not realize that actually visiting Paris would just make the longing stronger.

LOL. I suppose all the dog poo on the streets is magical as well.

Though I do love Paris.

You will love it. And the Orphan's Tales books, too.

When I ordered my school books, I also tossed in a preorder for Palimpsest so that it would be a surprise to me when it showed up b/c I never remember things like that! That said, I'll forget I posted to you and go about my chilly little day and hopefully it will arrive on an equally chilly day, where it will be a nice little pleasure to curl up with it. For the day. And night. And not sleep so that i will read it.
