While riding the Rapid downtown this morning, enjoying the fact that I was not on the freeway and enjoying the crislp beauty of our frigid weather, I spied a flock of Canada geese flying north.

Ambitious, optimistic, or simply insane?

Ambitious!

I may have 2.5 m high snowmounds at either end of my driveway, and it may have been -22c this morning, but the other day enough snow melted away from the area in front of my garage door to allow 20 mourning doves to gather there. Every morning I hear more and more birds.

Canadian geese? North? Does that mean six more months of cold weather?

We see that fairly often; they're usually just moving from the swampy area bordering the train tracks to the smaller pond further away from the tracks. This is at about 6 AM when the commuter trains are getting underway.

A giant flock of them has set up in my office park, wintering there, it appears.

In unrelated news, I had fresh goose for christmas dinner.

I saw a flock flying over my house here in Ontario a few days ago. They were honking up a storm and it amused me to imagine what the ones in back were honking at their leader: "Go back early you said. Won't be cold you said. Beat the rush you said. Snow's probably gone you said. *grumble* Moron."
