Compare and contrast [Apr. 14th, 2009|08:14 am]

So, Ferrett and I had the same thing for dinner last night. And we both got sick off of it (yes, we will be notifying the restaurant). But let's look at the differences in our reactions to food poisoning:

FERRETT: has upset stomach and takes Tums. Goes to bed and sleeps until somewhere around 3, when he suffers one bout of "intestinal distress" that keeps him in the bathroom for 10 minutes or so.

GINI: Begins throwing up shortly after getting home. Continues throwing up throughout the evening, to the point of dry heaving. Spends time in bathroom determining which end of her can be disciplined to postpone evacuations until the other end is satisfied. Entire body aches, feels chilled, goes through this routine every 15-30 minutes until 5am. Just had a sip of water and trying to decide if it will stay down. Dehydrated, sore, exhausted, but too achy to sleep.

I don't want to be a canary in this coal mine. My head is pounding from the stress of dry heaves, and my back and stomach muscles are pounding. Ferrett is sleeping.

Going to try and see if I can keep some Advil down and then rest some more. Bleah.

Oh love, be careful.
For later...saltines. Srsly. God's gift to the nauseous and gastrointestinal victims.

Man, I wish I had some. But there is applesauce, at least, for when I can face food.

Unfortunately the same thing happened the last time the wife and I got food poisoning. She was ill for days, in and out of the bathroom, dehydrated and feeling more miserable than having been hit by a truck. I got sick once and just slept most of the time, and was a little cranky.

I hope you can manage to get some rest and get better :)

Days? Sounds like she had more than food poisoning!

The food poisoning itself was most likely cleared up after the first day, but since she had gotten dehydrated and wracked over the coals during the day, she was still sick for a couple days after. Not happy times..

I've known people to get sick with food poisoning and be hospitalized for a week, so it can happen.

I feel your pain. Well, not literally. But whenever my boyfriend and I have the same ailment, he's sick for about a day and a half, and basically the only way he knows that he's ill is because his running time at the gym suffers. Yes, he will still be able to go to the gym and run; he's just a little slower. Whereas I will feel like death for weeks.

I hope you feel better quickly. It's definitely no fun when your insides are trying to be your outsides.

Jeeze. That really sucks! I hope you can get some sleep in, without anymore of that other stuff going on.

The one time that happened to me and the ex was when we threw an anniversary party for my parents about 18 years ago. Everything went well, the food was good, everyone had a good time...

...and that evening, he and I were taking turns in the bathroom, tossing cookies right and left. I was freaking out, wondering what had made us sick, and OMGZ was anyone else sick????

Made a buncha calls the next day and apparently no one else had gotten ill. Whew. Musta been something we scavenged out of the fridge later that evening.

If you can't keep down anything, call your doc for some meds! There's a new anti-emetic that you don't have to swallow whole, you can dissolve it under your tongue so it's more likely to stay in your system long enough to help. Feel better soon!

I generally get sick sooner and stay sick longer than wooden_reef as well. Which is good, because he, like a lot of guys, is a total baby when ill. Maybe it's an evolutionary survival mechanism... if men stayed sick and acted that way longer, women would kill them and the race would die off. :D

And yeah, I think that you have a point!

I have found a large basin kept in the bathroom works very well for those times that everything wishes to evacuate at once. Which for me, has been every day or so lately. Feel better soonest!

I debated hunting up something for that purpose, but it was too much work. Which, dumb, I know. But when you're that sick it's hard to motivate yourself.

Chicken Paprikash nachos. We've had 'em before, but not this illness. I'm hoping it's a one-time thing.

I have to say you seem to get food poisoning more than anyone I have ever known. And, you know, that's worrisome because we all love you and prefer you not have to spend your evenings vomiting.

Do you think it's a particular type of cuisine? If not you may want to see a gastro-enterologist to rule out any digestive track issues, for instance the reason you react much more violently than does Ferrett could be an ulcer.

I have always been susceptible to gastro-intestinal upset, even as a kid. This was chicken - foul bird! I may have to consider not eating it for a while and see what happens.

I am having the same problems, but not quite so viciously. Instant oatmeal is the only thing that's helping right now. Soon I'm going to have some rice, as I know it has always helped in the past. Hope you feel better soon!

I popped over here from Ferrett's journal to say this - OMG that sounds like me and my husband. He gets a case of the farts, and I am shaking like a leaf and unable to keep anything down for three days, if we eat something that's gone bad.

My deepest sympathies and empathy! :( I hope you get better really really soon.

N.

Re: More than just you

I didn't get sick for more than 24 hours, so it's hard to imagine that it would be dim sum. The only thing we ate that the guys didn't was the broccoli, but Ferrett didn't eat that.

Re: More than just you

It does seem like a long time for something to bloom, but you, Kat, Molly, and Anna all got violently ill with the exact same symptoms on the same night and at about the same time. Ferrett got less sick at that same time. That seems... just a little too coincidental.
