Dear Yahoo [Aug. 10th, 2009|04:38 pm]
Zoethe
[Current Mood |cynicalunimpressed]

Having tried "The New Yahoo!" for a week or so, this is the best thing I have to say about it:

Thank you so much providing an easy link for me to revert back to the old Yahoo!

I'm not quite sure why the newest web design trend thinks that we, the average user, and just waiting to inadvertently move our pointer one pixel too far right and have GIANT POPOUT MENUS block the thing we were attempting to click.

I'm not even sure why the trend thinks we want GIANT POPOUT MENUS even when we are hovering over the thing we did want to click. What's more, we certainly do not need GIANT POPOUT MENUS that do nothing but prevent us from clicking on what we thought was clickable, making us search for the new clicky place, nor GIANT POPOUT MENUS that inform us that they are actually kind of broken and we have to click through to where we wanted to be in the first place - once we relocate the actual clicky place.

Furthermore, what is the point of these GIANT POPOUT MENUS that give the illusion of enough space to actually accomplish something, but in reality are simply bloated cascading menus with the same dynamic capability of your smaller, less intrusive ones? When I am navigated away to the page I was intending to visit anyway, the existence of that additional bloat-o-menu has not enhanced my experience in the slightest.

There is no extra value in your supersizing, Yahoo.

So, just as I passed by your New and Updated email, so I am passing by the New Yahoo! I gave it a shot, and you kept my homepage loyalty by being smart enough to let me revert.

Don't give up your day job.

I wish I -could- go back to the old yahoo mail -- you know, the one where it didn't have a built-in chat program, and 'intuitive' this and that, and a hundred javascript bells and whistles that take for-bloody-ever to load on my old computer.

At least the old 'popup windows for everything' trend appears to be well dead and gone? *knocks on wood*

I just make myself invisible on everything possible and hunker down. If I want to chat, I know where to go, TYVM.

Alas, that doesn't stop it from loading up the chat client first. Yes, I know, I know, I need to switch to a faster computer -- but hell, shouldn't there be some no-frills email accounts available somewhere?

I'm too young to be a cranky old-timer remembering the good old days when email was email, chatting was chatting, and dial-up was fine for everyone but the power-users.

I found a way to disable the chat client. I can't remember how, but a google search should turn up something. Gosh, I hated that stupid thing.

I'm gonna stop you just short of that dial-up nonsense. Otherwise, I'm with ya!

Sounds like a good idea. I didn't end up writing any articles yesterday and I need to write about three per day. THEN today, my computer starts to act up horribly! In fact, I ran system restore and am STILL using Safe Mode with Networking after installing Google Chrome. I think my starting over may even have to be tomorrow!

I remember totally agreeing with you when they moved News down 'below the fold'. They have by the way, done away with that dropdown link - instead the MORE takes you to a whole page of choices!

I completely agree with your assessment of this, too. The GIANT POPOUT MENUS (plus ADVERTISING!) are really quite annoying.

I still hate the news placement, totally hate news being a "more" option, and regularly want to find someone to kick in the balls when my "lead story" is someone else's dancing hamsters. I just dread when they are finished beta testing if they make the "New" choice the only choice....

Amen, sister.

Preach on. From your lips - um, fingertips - to their ears.

We can only hope. I didn't see a good place to leave feedback, so voting with my feet - uh, preference - was my only choice.

Haha . . I'd never have found it if I didn't use my find to find "Yahoo" in the webpage and keep goin to the next instance until I saw "Switch back to Classic Yahoo."

Yeah, that's actually what I did, too. But at least it was on the front page and not hidden off under some options page!

I'm glad you found it. It's not LARGE, but at least it's on the first page!

I, too, am unimpressed. The "switch to compact view" under options made it better, but I definitely like classic much more!

The compact view made it look even more like an older not-so-great Yahoo page version.

Yeah, the compact view was a complete loser - more ads, less content! Whee!

At least, thankfully I only saw the whitespace due to AdBlock Plus, but I knew that's where they'd be!

Didn't you read the fine print? It said that you were signing up for the all new yahoo with GIANT POPOUT MENUS because they still haven't gotten over back when you signed up for email and it automatically gave out all your personal info to every ad company that had an account with Yahoo and it took two weeks to get your privacy back.

:>

But, hang in there. When they decide to make the old version no longer available because it is NEW AND IMPROVED... well... just remember, they don't WANT you to be happy.

I know! I get SO frustrated that Yahoo keeps dicking around with the classic mail, "improving" it by removing features I use and adding others I don't want. I have emailed them every single time, telling them that there's a REASON people aren't migrating to the new mail -- we like the old one! Duh.

My favorite is the "featured" story about how they made the new page. I can't imagine something I could care less about. Now I need to go find how to revert back to classic!
