Light at end of tunnel not train [Jun. 19th, 2010|11:21 am]
Zoethe
After a difficult night, I appear to be coming out the far end of this bout of distress. I came close, at one point, to thinking that a hospital visit was necessary, but this morning I am merely uncomfortable and improving.

But two of the comments of consolation last night were Chinese spam. And I have to wonder: what the hell do they get out of sending those comments? I am completely baffled by what it accomplishes. Any ideas?

My son says "if even one person falls for their spam, whatever it is, they're ahead of the game"

But...there's no way to fall for it. It's illegible to my audience and there are no links. That's why I don't get it.

Well, you could have people who read you who are able to read such things. At least they know to spam someone like you, with a wide audience, rather than my pitiful 7 or 8 friends list.

Spammers don't care. They're like dandelions, casting spores into the wind, hoping to find one gullible person.

Or so I believe. I don't understand spam or infomercials or even basic advertising, so am not qualified to answer.

Did you ever go to the doctor to get checked out for gallstones? The gallstone attacks I suffered made me feel like an Alien was about to emerge from the middle of my tummy!

Yup, and got a clean bill of gall health.

Oh! I'm glad to hear that. Well, it's very good that you now know that you're not dealing with that sort of situation. It sounds like you might have had some sort of food poisoning.

I think it was more a reaction than poisoning. But it was beastly and is still keeping me down.

"They wouldn't do it if it didn't work" doesn't work -- see business history, military history, etc.

No matter how stupid it is, some spammers will think it's guaranteed to work.

Spam in foreign languages saying that your account with a French (for example) bank has been hacked. The Nigerian Letter from Pope John Paul II's widow (which I didn't receive directly, and which I've lost.)

Yes, but HOW? No links, no message that anyone can read. How and why?

are the spam filters getting better at cracking down on spam comments with links? Otherwise it seems silly not to include a link. For the languages, I've noticed I'll sometimes go to a page and the browser will ask me, "This page appears to be in French. Would you like to translate it to English?" and if I click yes, it's all translated for me. I can't remember if that's because I use Chrome or if I had installed GoogleToolbar.

I fear it will remain a mystery.

As near as I can tell, they are spam-bots. They exist only to post random and annoying things to random journals. I've gotten them in the past as well and just deleted the comments after reporting them. Cause I'm not going to risk that there's some uber-clever virus packed in that jumble of characters, that only emerges after you've put it through a translator or something...

I delete them, and I'm sure they are bots. I just don't see how they, being simple text, could do much.

Take care of yourself, sweetie. I hope you can rest up today and not have to worry about anything distressing for a change.

Thanks, dear. I could definitely use a non-stress day or two.

Your distress sounds like food poisoning, and I'm glad it passed. (no pun intended)

I don't get your Chinese spammer either. Sorry ... :D

I'm still kind of shaky, but I think it was a food reaction rather than poisoning because I wasn't nauseated at all, and I've never had food poisoning without vomiting - and I've managed to get food poisoning far too many times in my life.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad night, and I hope you feel better now.

I also get Chinese Spam, and I don't get it, either. I don't read or speak Chinese, so even if I read the spam it would mean nothing to me.

Definitely improving, though it's a bit slower than I'd wish. Thanks.
