The answer to my wondering [Jun. 26th, 2010|02:37 pm]
Zoethe
Earlier I was wondering what would motivate me to get out of the house and do some gardening. Turns out the answer came on the very heels of my post.

All it took was Ferrett playing DJ Hero. Flee!!!!

It helped that it had clouded up and so was not horribly hot and in the direct sunlight. I got a lot of weeding done and trimmed back the English ivy where it was overshading the herb bed.

And I've decided that the death of the wisteria is beginning to look suspiciously like murder. The hyacinth and the tall grasses planted in the same corner have also all died. It's a bit disturbing.

I did not attack the fountain, nor pick the many ripe raspberries, as the cloud cover only lasted about 90 minutes. But I got a remarkable amount done in that amount of time. I have to remind myself that these things can be attacked in small doses and don't require a full day commitment.

Totally guessing here.

You mentioned corner...could it be a drainage issue maybe? If it is by the house, do the gutters leak?

Would someone really poison your plants?!

Re: Totally guessing here.

Not a low corner, so no drainage issues; just the back corner of the property. They were all thriving last summer, and the other two hyacinths in the yard and the grass plants in the opposite corner are all fine.

Wisteria is pretty invasive, even though I've worked to keep ahead of the runners. Someone may have objected to it....

Re: Totally guessing here.

Is there an animal (cat, dog, other) using the corner to urinate?

Re: Totally guessing here.

No sign of that. Dogs are not allowed to roam here, and we rarely see any critters other than bunnies.

Berry-picking (or harvesting in general) is one of the few tasks I tend to get roped into. The reward is just so much more immediate.

Which reminds me, I should go have some berries.

My poor yard is overrun with weeds. We bought our house last year. The fantastic garden was part of the appeal but I don't know what everything is. I've been waiting to see what everything turns out to be and some things that I'm not sure are weeds or not. We ripped out the grapes last fall and put in raspberries this year but probably won't have any until next year. Hope to put in some raised beds next year. It's a learning process, but mostly enjoyable.

The fence is chain link, so I could see the other side and kept pulling up the runners. I was very careful about that.

It's sitting out in the garden that gets me to work in it.
