Token entry - I am idealess these days [Jul. 17th, 2010|10:11 am]
Zoethe
Saturday morning, and I'm the only one up. This usually means only that Ferrett is still abed, but this weekend our sweeties Angie and Dave and here for and I Shoulda Seen That By Now movie marathon. They drove in from Michigan yesterday and then we went to see Inception last night.

I like a movie that treats an absurd concept as something to be taken for granted. Inception does not spend a lot of pseudoscience energy explaining or defending the ability of its characters to enter the dreams of others. It's pretty much taken for granted, and that is what works best if you are not telling an "origin story" tale. The visuals are stunning, the script is tight, and except for one overextended action sequence near the end, the pacing is just about perfect. I didn't think it was that hard to follow, but you definitely do not want to be taking any bathroom breaks during this movie. It's definitely worth seeing in the theater.

I just want to know why all the actors seem to look alike these days. We have more not-quite-Keanu Reeves types than I can track.

(Ferrett has written a real review of it. I am sort of brain dead.)

Anyway, friends will begin arriving soon for movies. Should shower and dress.

I love the idea of a 'I Shoulda Seen that by Now' marathon. What's on the agenda?

Not really sure. People bring movies and then we decide what to watch by consensus. I know that we have The Count of Monte Cristo and My Dinner with Andre in the queue, but we'll have to see what else people bring.

which version of *The Count*? The one I saw most recently and LOVED was the one with Jim Caviezel.

It's hot. YOu don't need to have any ideas when it's this hot.

The most recent one. We have watched Grandma's Boy (started badly but got better), My Dinner with Andre (turned off after ten tedious minutes), Harvard Beats Yale 29-29 (turned off after fifteen tedious minutes), Juno, and now watching Hogfather.

It's just like how all pop singers sound almost the same, because their vocals are passed through a filter to "sound better". All actors get processed through training and makeovers to look like Ted Logan.

It's like there is only one acceptable body type for leading men, plus the pudgy character actor and the nerd. Interchangeability seems to be the desired characteristic.

Charles Nelson Reilly said that the reason so many film actors seem the same these days is that they weren't trained in live theater.

Probably true, but there's also a preference for "safe" physicality.

"An absurd concept as something to be taken for granted."

My father-in-law and I were talking about that very thing after watching Inception. I think it makes for a more solid movie when "science" or "magic" is just taken for granted in stories/movies--because when you think about it, we take real absurd concepts for granted all the time. I'm SURROUNDED by mysterious scientific inventions that I have no idea how they work: microwaves, televisions, cell phones, computers, medications, planes, etc! I have some vague ideas, but really it's just the fact that everybody around me kind of goes with the flow and accepts it as reality, so I do, too. So if I'm watching a movie and the characters just go with it...so do I.

As soon as they started explaining about Midi-chlorians as the underpinning cause of the Force in Episode One, I knew the trilogy was doomed.

Re: "An absurd concept as something to be taken for granted."

Midichlorians are just a symbol of the awfulness that was the prequels.

Funny you should mention that...

After seeing Inception, one of my first comments (after the awestruck "Wow!", of course) was that Leonardo DiCaprio has grown up to become Kurt Russell.

I always thought Patrick Swayze and Kurt Russell looked a lot alike.
