The new attorney out here at Case has been hired. She starts in August. As we suspected, it was an inside job and all the noise about national recruiting and a search committee was for appearances. I have hardly met her, and it doesn’t really matter whether I like her or not – I won’t be working under her for more than a few weeks anyway.
There will be a transition to the downtown office. And now the word about the downtown office is starting to leak. High turnover among the associates (though the staff appears to be pretty stable). Very high-pressure environment. Plenty of overtime. There is a seamy underbelly to the "One Big Happy Family" façade.
I’m starting to get nervous about this. I know that I’m not working here as hard as I am able, but part of that is the frustration of having everything be piecemeal. I don’t know what’s going on 90% of the time – it’s simple fetch, made more complicated by the lack of information, which means that sometimes I’m looking right at something important but can’t recognize it because I have no clue that it’s something someone would be looking for. Or I’m left shrugging my shoulders when people ask me pertinent questions. I dunno why I want it. Just give it to me.
I need to gear up into “get the office ready for the next crew” mode. Yuck. I guess it’s nice to be a well-paid file clerk.
There are things I like here. I like it when they turn me loose on research. I like the people.
But I’m nervous about the change.
