Pain [Nov. 8th, 2015|11:36 am]
Zoethe
I've slipped a disc in my back. I already have degenerative disc disease and am practically bone-on-bone where my lumbar spine and sacral spine meet. I've been working to protect my back, but one bad step was all it took to mess me up. As in, I went straight to the ER. If you know me, you know that getting me to go to the doctor is often a battle.

I keep inching closer to back surgery. To say that I don't want to go through that is a severe understatement. Monday I have to follow up with my doctor and the spine clinic.

In the meantime, I've missed a weekend away with my hubby. I don't want this to become the pattern of my life. I am not young anymore, and it's a real risk. It makes me sad.

If you're at all interested, I can recommend some excellent people at the clinic (in particular, Michael Schaefer, Director of Musculoskeletal Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, is just an all around excellent guy if you need someone to go over options with - though his schedule has been getting a bit crazy, and I can highly recommend both a neurologist and a surgeon...)

Do you know if you're a candidate for an artificial disk? I don't know the criteria nearly as well for the lumbar region.

I'm so sorry to hear this. My back hurts a little just reading about it.

That sucks, and I hear you.
About 1/3 of adults have back pain at a given time, and it's the most common reason people call out of work. I only know this because I have a client who sells lasers and LED treatments and vibration therapy and stuff.

But yeah, I'm sorry that this happened, and that it's making you feel emotionally bad as well as physically pained.

Ouch :( I hope they have good treatments available for you that are less invasive. I"m sorry you missed time away with Ferret.

I had a spinal fusion in 2002 (L4-L5). It sucked. No lie. But it was only really bad for about 1.5 weeks. After 3 weeks, I went back to world half time and after 4 weeks, I was pretty well back to "normal." And SO much happier. The couple of weeks of misery was well worth the outcome.

That said, I cried like a 2 year old before they gave me the Versad at the hospital to calm me down. It's scary as hell. But the outcome was SO worth it.
