Did I even hear a PLEASE with that??? [Nov. 11th, 2003|10:38 pm]
[Current Mood |crankycranky]

The World Trade Orgainization recently told the United States that its steel tariffs were unacceptable.

Excuse me?

Was I in the middle of finals when we joined the United States of Every-fucking-where?

Anyone who knows me knows that there is nothing jingo-istic about me. I support immigration. I'm liberal and proud of it. But, ya know, there are limits to how much I want to see this country dictated to by the rest of the world. There is a point where you have to say, let's take care of our own.

Yeah, I know there is great scolding: "Well, you didn't like our tariffs, so you shouldn't be doing it, either! Nyah!" To which I say, tough. Part of being a country is negotiating the best for your people.

We've given up a lot of our power in the last few years, in an attempt to globalize the economy. Most of this is wise. But there has to be a limit.

I have entirely the other view on this - Who were the US kidding when they added 30% import tax two years ago on any steel imports?

You (the US) signed up for the free trade agreements so that other countries could not add import tax on your imports, and now you claim that its only fair that you have your cake and eat it?!?

The WTO ruling on the breach of these agreements has lead to the EU drawing up a list of (targeted) products that will have import tax added to them, if the US continues to tax the Steel - amazingly, the EU list is very focused - primarily targeting Iconic US brands, and brands from Swing voting States - hopefully this will give Bush pause for thought.

I love the Americans, but I can't agree with the sentiment that what is good for us is good for everyone else - it just isn't.

Keith (Sorry if that was a little scathing at the start)

I said the same thing to her, but with a lot less data last night. I wouldn't worry.

See? We don't always agree. I just don't know enough to debate properly.
