Long day, filled with writing and paper shuffling, but managed to get a good chunk of writing done. My office looks like a blizzard hit, though, and I don't know where I'm gonna put my books to start studying.
Took a break this evening and went to see "Calendar Girls," Helen Mirren's new film, which is a bit like "The Full Monty" but is the true story of a group of middle-aged British women doing a nude calendar to benefit the local hospital's cancer ward. In the beginning one of the women's husband is dying of cancer - the inspiration for the benefit. Even now, after almost five years, watching the man struggle for breath and his wife hold a juicebox to his lips with that tender respect borne of an unwanted necessity, it was like a knife in my gut, remembering doing the same kind of care for my friend Annie when she was dying. The movie is terrific fun, despite those gut-wrenching moments. See it if you get a chance.
School starts tomorrow. I'm ready for it, but not really ready to be doing it and the fulltime job. This was a very tough Christmas break, filled with crises and new beginnings and a lot of emotion. I hope that the semester will settle into a quiet pattern and rythmn and I will get through it steadily.
Finally, a quiz. I take more of these than I post (it's a guilty pleasure) but I kind of needed this one.
