Cafe of Doom - the musical [Jun. 29th, 2005|06:45 am]

Okay, not really.

Met up last night with dania_audax at Mocha Dreams , the new cafe that has opened around the corner from us. A few people did wander in and out throughout the evening, and they seem to have in common with us the objective "wanting to keep the place open," because they certainly aren't doing it for the quick and efficient service. The owners are really nice people who have no clue how to run a restaurant. But when Ferrett didn't eat the soup that came with his asian chicken wrap, the cook came out front to ask whether there was something wrong with it and if he wanted something else (there wasn't; he simply hadn't expected soup and was full), and they have scattered games throughout the room to encourage that "come in and hang out" atmosphere. If they can increase their efficiency and continue trying to make themselves part of the community, they may have a shot at staying open.

We had a nice evening of chatting with Dani, who identifies herself as quiet until she gets to know people, but who has a wicked sense of humor and completely broke me during a discussion of the Matrix sequels. She hasn't seen them, so Ferrett and I were ranting on about how dreadful they were, particularly Reloaded. After listening to us tag-team diss the movie for a while, working ourselves up as we are wont to do, she nodded sympathetically and leaned slightly forward, a look of concern on her face.

"Okay," she said, "show me on the doll where the bad movie touched you."

Pretty much Ferrett's response. I was laughing too hard to reply.

Hmmm... Idea

There was a local place here that had some of the same problems for a bit. Then it was suggested that they hire one waitress and have poetry slam readings and an open mic night. Whoever volunteered to organize it got a $25 dollare tab for doing so.

After a bit, they were able to hire 3 more wait staff and additional kitchen help because... well, it was just cool... it was taken off the "fast service" corner of the market and sort of the "come in, sit down, relax" corner of the market.

BEfore long they also allowed artists to display their work on the walls and people could call the artists and request to purchase item. The shop got 5% of the sale.

2 years after opening, it became the place to go for good coffee, light munhies and great atmosphere. No, service was never FAST, but you weren't expecting that. They also stopped morning service and stuck with lunch and dinner.

If they ever ask for suggestions... go for it.

Re: Hmmm... Idea

That's the way I'm hoping this place goes.

And this hasn't been posted to metaquotes yet? OMG, if I had been taking a drink at the wrong time, my poor laptop would have been shorted out because my coffee would have come out of my nose and splattered all over my keyboard.

That is too funny. Do you mind if I quote that last little bit in my own journal? Properly credited, of course.

You may quote, and metaquote if you wish. I'm glad I wasn't drinking at the time myself!

If I knew where that little "You've been metaquoted" sticky picture was, I'd post it here, but I don't. Just know that you've been metaquoted.

You may, and that's actually what my tattoo is. If you'll give me your email address, I'll send you the larger file either tonight or tomorrow night.
