News of the goddamn frickin' weird:

Suicide Mistaken for Halloween Decoration

FREDERICA, Del. - The apparent suicide of a woman found hanging from a tree went unreported for hours because passers-by thought the body was a Halloween decoration, authorities said.

The 42-year-old woman used rope to hang herself across the street from some homes on a moderately busy road late Tuesday or early Wednesday, state police said.

The body, suspended about 15 feet above the ground, could be easily seen from passing vehicles.

State police spokesman Cpl. Jeff Oldham and neighbors said people noticed the body at breakfast time Wednesday but dismissed it as a holiday prank. Authorities were called to the scene more than three hours later.

"They thought it was a Halloween decoration," Fay Glanden, wife of Mayor William Glanden, told The (Wilmington) News Journal.

"It looked like something somebody would have rigged up," she said.

I have to wonder - was it her last laugh on the world, or just one more pathetic confirmation that no one cared?

That's just... disturbing.

I was wondering if she had put a bag over her had or some such thing so people wouldn't realize right away they were looking at a person rather than a dummy.

Her actions do seem like a major "Fuck you" to the world.

Yeah, I saw that. I'm sorry for her - I hope that it WAS her last laugh, and not that she hoped someone would see her and stop her.

A very similar thing happened out this way about a month ago, maybe a bit longer. A man hung himself from an overpass, and despite heavy traffic, it took police roughly 2 hours to even know about it. People assumed that it couldn't really be a body hanging there, that it had to be fake.

The local radio talked with a LOT of people that had passed underneath it and thought it was something fake.

Wow - something like that happened around here a year or so ago too.

This reminds me of the performance artist in germany who jumped out of a window and people thought it was part of her art.

She clearly did it for "the lolz".

I must admit, I DID laugh.

I suppose it could be any number of things. The first idea that pops in my head isn't a last laugh, a hope that someone would notice her finally and/or stop her, but more of an accusation. "THIS is what [the world] has done to me." My initial thought was she didn't necessarily want pity, but wanted the world to feel guilty. I don't know if I'm putting it the right way. Perhaps "That'll show 'em" with a lot more venom and at the same time melancholy and despair behind it.

If I wanted to commit suicide that's definitely how I'd want to do it. A final burst of morbid humor.

Really really scary at the same time, though. Imagine how it must feel to be one of those people who drove by and dismissed her body, then realized the truth later...
If I were one of those people I'd lose sleep.

It'd be better if you also wore a clown costume when you did it.

That sounds like it'll become one of those urban legends, like the girl who got hit by a car while riding her bike, and no one noticed her body lying in the fake graveyard in front of someone's house.

That's not an urban legend! That happened to my co-worker's brother's wife's cousin's daughter.

I can see how the mistake was made.

But didn't she have anyone who would miss her? Poor thing, not one person wondered where she was that day?

Equally surprising - didn't she have anyone who would have noticed her mood changing over time, and be concerned about mounting depression?

When one is suicidal, it is not always apparent to the rest of the world. Trust me on that.

I think there were a couple of cases like this within the past few years; people hanging themselves (in one case, accidentally, as part of an actual Halloween display) and not being noticed, because of the time of the year.

It hurts to think about.

I have to wonder - was it her last laugh on the world, or just one more pathetic confirmation that no one cared?

Perhaps she saw the news story from just south of me: some pranksters hung a mannequin from a sign over I-95. People thought it was a person, and traffic ground to a standstill. Some time later, the police arrived and determined it was a sick joke.

I am surprised, though, that someone going past the house at close proximity wouldn't be able to tell that it was a person and not a decoration.

It probably was her last laugh on the world, and an example of how people don't pay attention to their surroundings. Self absorbed, they are.

That's not quite fair, if self-absorbed is meant in a negative sense. Like, are we supposed to be constantly on the look-out on the off chance that one day a stranger might attempt suicide in front of our eyes and we might be able to save them? BTW this comment is not attended as an attack on kmg or as disregarding the seriousness of suicide, I'm just questioning kmg's last sentence.

Self absorbed probably wasn't the best term - I always scored higher on math than verbal ;)

By self-absorbed, I mean that generally people are completely oblivious to their surroundings, be it while driving, in a supermarket, walking on the sidewalk, etc. At least they are where I live.

Whether or not one considers that a negative personality trait is up to the eye of the beholder, I suppose.

Unfortunately, I was thinking the latter...

Sure they cared! They thought she made great decoration!!!

I can't help thinking it's karmic payback for her deciding to end her life in a public place, especially if she had the "I'll show them!" kind of thinking going on at the time...
