|A social life

After four years dominated by school, I still feel that I am emerging. A little punchy. Not quite in possession of my sea legs yet. I am still looking for ways to measure my time, still not quite trusting that it is mine.
This weekend went a long way toward convincing me.
Friday night was a lovely evening at the Velvet Tango Room with a group of friends. It's always such a pleasure to visit. The staff greet us and make us right at home, even when we've been away for some time. And not just us, not by a long shot - the warmth and friendliness permeates the entire place. As always, Paulius was the perfect host. It's wonderful watching the work of someone who loves what he does and is so damned good at it. In fact, the drinks would be secondary to the sheer pleasure of being there except for the fact that they are so amazingly good. If you haven't been, go.
On Saturday, misia was in town and we visited with her (it was supposed to be lunch, but she was suffering from an unfortunate dairy intake the night before and was not up to eating). I love meeting lj people because each one of them is both familiar and a surprise. You know them from their writing, but you also learn a new level of who they are. It was quite a lovely afternoon, and I'm hoping to see more of her when she ventures out here to visit family again.
Saturday evening was mishamish and babymonkey's going-away party. They are moving to the Cincinatti area so that babymonkey can go to school. We started the evening with dinner at Bucca di Beppo, which was great and where we met yet another really cool person, thedouglas, who directed Misha in summer rep this year. From there we were supposed to go to lasertag and whirlyball, but alas, because we had not made reservations and let them know we were coming, they were closed. The evening ended with a very small group raiding babymonkey's parent's liquor cabinet and hanging out, talking. You know we're getting old because "raiding the liquor cabinet" did not actually put an appreciable dent in any of the bottles therein.
Sunday, Ferrett's new weekly multiplayer Magic group gathered in our diningroom, and I can see yet another group of friends budding from there. And then last night we went out with our Monday Night Movies crowd and saw The Illusionist (which was quite lovely, particularly visually).
Four social days in a row. And I don't have any homework to catch up on. (Of course, work work is crazy right now, and I will probably be there late tonight. Not everything changes.)
I'm still trying to work everything I want to do into my schedule, and part of the problem is I'm still physically recovering from everythng that came before. Yesterday's bike ride was the first that felt really good (having ridden hard two days in a row, today my knees get a day off). I'm still feeling vaguely exhausted and slightly under the weather, but that seems to be slowly diminishing.
Life is slowly coming around to where I want it to be. Life is good.
