Great joy must always be balanced with great pain (in the ass) [Dec. 4th, 2008|06:45 pm]
[Current Mood |chipperchipper]

We took the iPhone to AT&T today to get the SIM card installed, and by gum if they couldn't use my same SIM card. Huzzah!! thinks I. All my contact info will be preserved!!

Yes, I can hear you all laughing now.

SOME of the phone numbers were kept. NONE of the addresses.

Well thinks I. But no fear; I backed up and will be able to recover the information

Yes, yes. Keep laughing.

So, if you know that you used to be in my phone, or if you think that maybe you were in my phone, or if you figure that by gawds you should be in my phone, please Please PLEASE respond to this with current name (don't assume that I can connect your LJ name to your real name - there's a reason that parties with LJ people have double introductions), current phone(s) and whether they are land or mobile, and, if you want, current address.

Two things:

1. DON'T ASSUME THAT YOU MUST BE ONE OF THE NUMBERS THAT WERE KEPT. There was NO rhyme or reason to the kept and unkept contacts.

2. DON'T ASSUME THAT I KNOW YOU SO WELL THAT I DON'T NEED REMINDING. Even if you are related to me. I don't memorize any numbers anymore. That's why there is speed dial.

oh, and

2a. DON'T STEW ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT I WANT YOUR PHONE NUMBER IN MY PHONE. Chances are that if you wonder at all, I probably do.

Comments will be screened, of course, and I won't respond to individual comments because they unscreens them, and even a moment of unscreening is too much if it has personal info. If you don't want to leave it as an LJ comment, email me at zoethe at yahoo dot com.

Thanks. Now back to playing with my phone! Even with the PITA of reentering stuff, it is AWESOME!

Is all the contact info restored if you put the sim back in the original phone?

Considering what a delicate operation it is to remove the SIM from an iPhone, I'm not even willing to try.

They had to go through a long process transferring my contacts from my old SIM to my new SIM. I think everything made it intact, but then I decided to sync all the contacts with Google contacts. This resulted in a few phone number deletions, and a good bit of painful paring-down and consolidating, but now that it's done I really like having all my contact info synchronized constantly. You should be able to do the same with Yahoo.

Yes, I have to figure out how it all works, but what I've done so far has been awesome. I figure on losing two full days to get all the information up-to-date, but eventually it will be.

1 - ouch. without my phone, i'd be crippled, so i understand not remember anyone's anything... it's a nightmare.

2 - can't you put the card back into your old phone and see if you can recover the info that way? manual transfer is a *#$(, but it'd be something...

3 - still can taste that iPhoney goodness....

1. Thanks

2. I am skeered of performing a SIMectomy on the iPhone - it's a delicate wee thing. And I do have most the information stored other places for non LJ people.

3. Yum!!!!
