Ouch [Jan. 28th, 2010|05:11 pm]
Zoethe
Walking through a whipping windstorm, my head down and watching my feet, I stepped into a hole completely hidden by snow. My ankle twisted, and I was abruptly launched face-first into full sprawl, Hulksmash flatten to the sidewalk. From the position I was in, I would have to support my weight on my sprained ankle to get back up. I managed to use my briefcase as a lever to get myself back to my feet.

That left me upright, but in need of limping back to the car and getting myself home. And to get my semi-hysterical tears under control. There's nothing I hate worse than falling like that. It feels like a failure at being an adult, besides just the damned pain.

Assessment: sprained ankle, skinned and bruised knee, bruised elbows and palms. Those are the injuries that make me feel 9 years old. Muscle aches, sore back, sore neck. Those are the ones that make me feel old.

Nah...9-year-olds bounce & don't notice it hurting 20 minutes after a fall like that!

Ouch...sprained ankles are the worst! There would've been tears for me, too. So sorry you took a spill -- hope it mends quickly.

(Also, I LOL'd at your icon. So much love, srsly. Is it gankable?)

I'm just glad you weren't hurt worse!

I hope you get your boo-boos dressed in a most adult manner and at least served some ice cream in compensation (or is chocolate the current adult salve these days?)

That, alas, is not possible in this house as the last batch of band-aids we bought has Hello Kitty on them.

I think whisky is the adult salve.

You're probably going to hear this but it bears repeating:
Ice. Tylenol. Elevation. NeoSporin & Bandaids as appropriate. Tea. Snuggly blanket. Ferret. Kleenex.

Those last few aren't precisely medically documented cure. But they are most definitely therapeutic.

I did much the same thing about a year ago -- I think I posted the pictures of the Giant Bruises of Doom on either my LJ or FB. I know the feeling you speak of but really, that sort of thing happens to anyone, regardless of age.

Hey kids don't sprain their ankles. Teens and young adults do. The rest I can't help you with. My knees pop when I go up and down stairs LOL. But I'm a faller downer so I feel your pain. Sorry you fell :( I hadn't realized the weather was so crappy in OH. We're not due to get hit till Fri night

I am a faller downer and it frustrates me. The weather was quite nasty today while I was out. I have no idea what it's doing now, since I spent the day in bed.

Well, damn. I hope that ankle isn't too horrible, nor the rest of your aches and scrapes.

Also, that's exactly how I feel when I fall on my face or butt. Very much not-an-adult. It's frigging embarrassing. I'm a big woman, and I'm always sure people are laughing.

I've never had anyone actually laugh that I know of, but the feeling is there, isn't it?

I'm sure The Ferrett will do all he can to take away the sting.

Yes, the feeling laughed at it definitely there. There was hardly anyone out, though. Thanks.

Yeah, I felt pretty silly when I tripped over a huge box I had left in the kitchen like a doofus, went flying and landed on the tile floor with a fractured wrist. The embarrassing part was having to tell the EMTs how it had happened. Made me much more aware of "falling" and almost paranoid about not doing it again.

I imagine much of your frustration came from the fact that you were doing everything right, and yet a situation you had no way of knowing about jumped up and grabbed you. You weren't careless, but it got you anyway. Makes ya wanna shriek with tears of rage. Damn, damn, damn.

Didn't anybody try to help you? You are obviously a survivor, as am I. You were able to assess your situation, get yourself righted and home without assistance. But somebody should have helped you! There's no shame in tears, though, as long as that's not all you do about the problem. Even as frustrated as you were, you persevered and did what had to be done, and for that I applaud you.

I hate Ohio weather. It's a large part of why I live in FL. I'll take the occasional hurricane to a snowstorm any day of the week. That business of one day of snow and then three or four days of slush finally got to me.

And no one around to help? Awwww :( I'm sure Ferrett will take good care of you now that you're home. Stay warm and safe.

I managed to slip on ice and fall getting out of my car a couple weeks ago. Just bruises and my Canadian pride injured. :)
