I've got a little list.... [Mar. 28th, 2010|10:35 am]
Zoethe
"Went to bed too late; got up too early" seems to be the theme in my flist today. Me, too. I went to bed at an okay hour, but could not sleep so got up for a little while to try and reset, then still woke up after only 6 hours.

One of the things keeping me awake was, as I explained to Ferrett last night, my need for a "rewards sticker" application. Not a To Do list as such - I have lists for work deadlines and project goals. What I want is something that lets me list all the things I want to get done during each day - i.e., exercise, read, sew - and allows me to check them off and, ideally, if I complete all those tasks for the day then rewards me with a happy song or pictures of puppies or some other minor reward.

I found some iPhone apps that accomplish some of that. Most of them are designed for small children and reward gold stars. I'm not sure what this says about me.

Actually, that's a lie. I'm completely sure what that says about me.

Anyway, moving out of the kids' apps and into the more adult ones, I found something that allows me to make said lists. But ticking off the items is the only reward, and it only allows for scheduling activities either daily or weekly, not MWF or any other combination.

Still, it's something. And maybe it will help me on those days like yesterday when I wanted to do something but was just not quite motivated enough to get started. And maybe maybe someday there will be an app that rewards me with flying unicorns dancing to sappy music. Or something.

Excuse me now. I have a list to accomplish.

Edit: Found a better iPhone application. Now happy. Still no puppy pictures, but one can't have everything.

Dave used to use something called "Joe's Goals" which let you assign point values and then give yourself a reward after so many points.

I'm not sure if it'll do what you're looking for, but I totally understand the need.

Actually, that looks promising. Now if they only have it for iPhone....

Re: Rewards/Gold Stars

That looks way too complicated to me.

Just wanted to say to add another to the "went to bed too late" category. 5 AM is too late, even if you're having lots of fun.

... use LJ? Post "I got ## stars! Puppy picture time!" and let people bombard you with such things?

Added step, yes... but huge variety in the pictures!

Also, I'm pretty sure what it says about you isn't bad stuff at all. :)

Yes, but daily it would quickly lose followers. Perhaps as a monthly reward demand, though!

If you have an iPhone, I think I've found the answer.

see, i want something like this too (though i'm actually not so much caring about the rewards part), though i don't really want it on a smart phone, as i don't have one. but something that would let me schedule for MWF, or (as is my schedule for bills) Payday Friday, Wednesday, Monday (over two weeks). I'm using Tasks in Outlook atm, but it doesn't do all the stuff i want. I'd also love to be able to sort my tasks into categories - Food Prep, Housework, Shopping, Personal Projects . . .

I don't need it for things like "make dinner" or "clean kitchen" or "do laundry" - those I get done. It's the creative, me stuff that I want it for.

And I love my iPhone. For it has an app for that.

I like the gold star idea. If it says something about you, I doubt it is bad.

It would be an interesting extension to turn it into a CRPG, where item completion gives you experience. "Damn, I can't get past this monster/puzzle, I'd better go vacuum and clean the kitchen so I can level up!" Some people would cheat, of course, but for others (assuming the game is fun) it could be an awesome motivator.

There is Chore Wars, but I found it bulky and confusing, and not very easy to navigate. A better version would be awesome.
