Oh, did you ever see The Pirate Movie?
Yes. It was one of the reasons why people thought pirate movies were doomed never to make money again - as was, I must admit, Penzance!
On DVD? Rock on!
I came home from Stratford with the Gondoliers and Mikado DVDs I'd been lacking all this time, to add to my Pirates and Iolanthe - I'll have to look into this one as well. (I can't bear the young people in it, but I do like Kevin Kline and Angela Lansbury. [g])
They have the Stratford Gondoliers on DVD now? It's the one I've been missing!!
Yes they do!!! ... Alas I can't seem to find that their Theatre Store has any online presence, but you may be able to find it through the usual channels - or, if not, remind me next summer and I'll get you one when I'm up there.
I definitely want it! Let me know when you're going!
(I have searched for it in the past and have acquired the other three, but not Gondoliers.)
OMG Yay! I am so jealous!!!
I'm tickled. It's only $15. Add it to your Christmas list!

Wha? It wasn't out like years ago? I could have sworn I saw that version (or part of it) on TV once.
I am clearly out of the G&S loop.
The stage version (Masterpiece Theater or summat) has been out for some time, but not the actual movie. Angela Lansbury is not in the stage version and there are many wonderful bits in it that just aren't in the stage version.

It was many years ago, and I only caught the very end, but I'm pretty sure it a) was on sets, not just filming the play, and b) had Linda Ronstadt. But my memory could be entirely faulty.
The stage one had Linda Ronstadt, and the movie was previously released on VHS, but this is the first release of the film on DVD.
Thanks for the heads-up! I love this version and I've been wishing for a DVD for years.
I have been bemoaning its absence from DVD status for years now, particularly since my VHS copy has been played to death. I am glad to share the love!
Watching it will be a privilege and pleasure that you treasure beyond measure! :D
