Some year, Cat Valente is going to make November 1 simply explode. No single day can be stuffed with so much awesomeness and not burst forth at the seams.|
First, it is the anniversary both of her and Dmitri's move to their lovely Maine island and of her fabulous wedding. Those alone would be enough to make it a great day. But today is also the release date of her newest book, The Habitation of the Blessed, the beginning of her series retelling the legend of Prester John.
If you do not know the legend of Prester John, you could look it up on wikipedia, which would be quick but extremely dry, or you could watch Cat's Prester John tutorial, with action figures and LOLCats, which is funny as hell. Take a few minutes; you'll be glad you did:
Now, for my review of the book. I can't really give you one, because I haven't finished it yet. In fact, I sat down with it and read about 12 pages in the 20 minutes I had available. And that's because reading Cat's words is like drinking fine wine: you want to roll them around in your mouth and luxuriate in them. They are delicious. Buy the book. Buy extra copies so that you can give them to your friends.
And this is where it all turns into a weird TV ad: But, wait, there's more! In addition to these wonderful anniversaries and her book release, the special Muslim/Arab issue of Apex magazine is also released as of today. The stories are beautiful, and a wonderfully positive response to the Elizabeth Moon/WisCon controversy. You will enjoy them.
And next year I will own a hard hat in time to wear it on November 1: watch out for falling awesomeness!
