Paging Dr. House? [Sep. 10th, 2012|03:05 pm]
Zoethe
First of all, thank you for all the well-wishes and prayers. Mom is doing better today. She is still intubated, but she's responsive and her organs appear to be coming back on line.

The thing is, though, that the doctors have no idea what caused this. They did a CT scan, expecting to see blood clots that would have caused her system to go acidic and start shutting down. There were none. They have no idea why her body just unilaterally went nuts. They told my sister something about her system not processing her blood and that's what caused it. Which, what? She had blood work on Friday and was pronounced to be in great shape and her iron count was fine. By Saturday her BP was 50/30 and they were giving her transfusions again.

This is not the first time her doctors haven't known what was going on with her, but it is the worst. I really think they have no idea what they are doing.

So my current plan is that I am not flying to Montana. Instead, I am going to do everything in my power to get her to come out here and be seen at a real hospital. I do not know if I will succeed in this task, but I will seriously try.

Again, thank you all for the well-wishes. I have read and been buoyed up by them all. If there is any change, I'll let you all know.

Glad to hear she is doing better. I was going to ask about getting second opinions. Because saying "beats me" for something that serious? Wouldn't make me feel very confident in their abilities, or make me likely to see them again. Of course, if they are the only game in town...

I talked to her tonight, and she is finally sounding amenable to coming here. When she gets better.

My mother looks at me funny when I say this but if you are going to be sick, this is kinda the place to be - we have amazing resources and I hope you are able to get your mother to them :)

I agree with your decision...

If at all possible, get her to you. This is just frustrating beyond belief.

Re: I agree with your decision...

I talked with her on the phone yesterday evening, and she is finally amenable to the idea of coming out here. Which, YAY! Now it's just going to be a matter of getting her well enough to travel and coordinating it all.

My senile grandfather snuck off to clean his own gutters a few year's ago, slipped, and nearly fell off. The doctor had NO idea how he was fine, b.c for all intensive purposes, he should have cracked his kneecap and caused internal bleeding. The human body can be pretty unexpected sometimes... I hope she stabilizes soon!

::nod:: Agree with your reasoning -- there are certain centers of medical excellence, and Cleveland is one.

I may be 110% off here -- but there are many times when the body is exhausted (and multi-system organ failure is one of the kinds of shut-downs you see then) but the spirit has something important enough to do to keep driving the meat. The hard-core rationalists hate that logic, because every malfunction must have a cause (and by extension a cure) in their worldview. However, since we still can't explain causation on so many things in medicine to begin with, I stick with the view that leaves the whole person (spirit included) having the experience.

If she's having MSOF, they can't explain causation and can't give a real estimate of timing. It truly is up to her spirit. Next time you talk, listen closely for what her spirit is saying underneath the words. {{{}}}
